I Spy Through My Pony's Eye!

So, how does my pony view things?


Your pony does not see the world as you do.
All members of the horse family, including ponies, wild ass and zebra, evolved as 'prey' animals, (they make good eating!) and so over millions of years, they have developed extremely sharp senses and reactions, helping them escape any predators wanting to eat them, including our ancestors! This means that your pony is naturally suspicious of anything unfamiliar to him and if he is frightened or feels that his safety is threatened, his instinct is to get away as fast as possible. If you are a horse, pony or zebra in the wild, you don't have time to stop and think; if you're slow to react you may well end up as someone's dinner!


Evolution, then, has hard-wired your pony to see the world as a potentially dangerous place and his instinct to take flight is probably as alive today as it's ever been.


When we understand just how scary some things can appear to a pony, we can appreciate even more just how amazing it is that they co-operate with us as they do, and, if they trust us, will even go against their instincts to please us.

Why is my pony's sight so special?


Your pony's eyesight is remarkable and is often the first sense that will alert him to danger. Just think how good he is at noticing movement in the distance, vital if you want the advantage of a head-start when you're running for your life! This is thanks to the size of his eye. Horses and ponies have the largest eye of all land mammals.


Like other prey animals, your pony's eyes are set on the side of his head. This gives him a very wide field of vision which he can extend even further by bending his neck. If there is something dangerous stalking you from behind, it pays to be able to see it as soon as possible.


Your pony does have blind spots, however. One of these is directly in front of him, another is directly behind. This is why the best way to approach a horse or pony is slightly from the side, so that you he can see you clearly.
 
How does my pony see?



Primarily your pony uses what is known as monocular vision, that is, he sees a different picture in each eye. Like humans though, he also uses binocular vision - using both eyes to focus on something.


The top part of your pony's retina, (the cells at the back of the eye where images are formed) is responsible for long-range sight. This is why he will raise his head to see things in the distance. The lower part of the retina is used to see things that are nearby and so your pony will lower his head to see something close up


When your pony changes from using monocular vision to binocular vision in order to zoom-in on something, the object can appear to jump into focus, which is why he might suddenly shy at something you thought he had seen. By calmly allowing your pony time to get a good look at something that has spooked him, he will be able to get it into focus, see that it is of no danger, and chances are, he will quickly settle down.

Does my pony see in colour?


For a long time it was thought that ponies could only see in black and white, but research has shown that they are actually able to distinguish some colours.

Can my pony see in the dark?

Ponies have excellent night vision. A pony's eye is also good at making use of fairly low levels of light such as at dawn and dusk, but is not good at adjusting quickly from light to dark or vice versa. It makes sense then, that sometimes a pony will baulk initially when going from a sunny yard into the dark interior of an unfamiliar trailer or stable.




Always try to see things from your pony's point of view.


If you always try and see things from your pony's point of view, you will come to understand his behaviour better and through this understanding can build and develop the closest bond with your best friend.

Can owning a dog help reduce the number of visits you make to your doctor?


It does seem that keeping a dog significantly contributes to overall wellbeing and good health.


Repeated research has shown that dog owners are generally healthier and tend to live longer than non-owners.


More recent research in America has shown that keeping a dog is a more effective treatment than certain drugs, in preventing high peaks in blood pressure during periods of increased stress or tension.


Both our mental and physical health is improved by dog ownership. The mere act of stroking a dog fosters a feeling of calm, lowers blood pressure and causes a reduction in the body's production of cortisol, the so-called "stress hormone".


Research shows that typically, dog owners tend to have lower blood pressure, a lower heart rate, and even lower cholesterol levels, which all help lessen the risk of heart disease.


Those who are unfortunate enough to suffer a heart attack are twice as likely to be still alive, one year after their attack, than those without a dog.


The exercise we get from walking our dogs benefits us in many ways. The most obvious perhaps, being the calories we burn-up, helping us to keep trim, but are you also aware that another benefit of regular walking, being a weight-bearing exercise, is an improvement in bone density, therefore lessening your likelihood of developing osteoporosis?


On their website, the NHS tells us that by walking regularly we can help reduce our risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes, and even arthritis.


Exercise also encourages our brains to produce endorphins, helping to lift our mood, so perhaps it's no surprise to learn that walking has also been shown to help alleviate the symptoms of depression.


Dogs are a good antidote to loneliness, and companionship is often the reason we bring a dog into our home. Whilst walking your dog itself promotes numerous health benefits, it also provides you with the perfect excuse to be outside, giving you more opportunity to meet others. A dog is a good conversation starter and people often seem quite keen to chat and indeed, will often initiate conversation, when you're out with your dog.


You may decide to enter a few shows with your dog or join a local training class or club. These are also good ways to meet like-minded folk. I have some friends: a happy couple, who have been together for over 6 years now, having met at their local puppy training class!


A dog is an unbeatable friend. Your dog won't judge you, or talk behind your back. He will love you unconditionally, is always on your side and will always be thrilled to see you. He won't answer you back, and may well defend you as though his life depends on it!


Undoubtedly, owning a dog is a serious responsibility and a long-term commitment. Demands will be made on your time, patience, energy and cash. You should only consider getting a dog if you are fully confident that you are willing and able to provide a loving, knowledgeable home where your dog can lead a full and happy life.


If, after all that, you do decide to go ahead and bring home a canine companion, like millions of others, you might well decide that your mutt really is the best medicine of all!

3. Calm down. By this I mean, don’t stress about the stuff you don’t have to. This is actually a very funny statement coming from me who used to stress about everything! Deadlines, laundry, work, family… you name it, I stressed about. Not until I realized that this would kill me no matter how healthy my food was did I drop the stress and pick up the laughter. Right now as I write this newsletter, I’ve got more things that need to get done today than are humanly possible. My reaction “Haha..better put my Superwoman shirt on”

4. Do not and I repeat, do not go on a low-fat diet. Your heart condition may get worse in your attempts. Drop the bad fats (like hydrogenated oil and the nasty oil in French fries and donuts) and start eating more healthy fats like coconut oil, olive oil, salmon, walnuts and whole organic eggs.

5. Do not be afraid to eat saturated fat. My Favorite Ways to Eat Nut Butters!

Here are some of my favorite ways to use different nut butters…



1. Almond Butter with apple sauce with cinnamon sprinkled on top – a great after dinner snack if you’re looking for something sweet.

2. Almond or Walnut Butter on pretty much any fruit. My new favorite is almond butter on fresh figs…yummy!

3. Nut Butter and Apple Butter Sandwich – one of my favorite on-the-go breakfast options. I use 1-2 tbsp of nut butter and 1 tbsp of apple butter on 2 slices of sprouted grain bread and out the door I go.

4. Cashew Butter on celery sticks – add a few raisins for a little sweet taste.

5. Walnut Butter in oatmeal – I mix the walnut butter right into my warm oatmeal. Sometimes I add 1 tsp of honey as well.


All of these options are a great way to get a ton of healthy fats, especially Omega 3’s, into your daily meal plans.

Sample Workout To Get Your Fat Loss Engines Going

Multiplanar Movements are exercises that ensure you are moving in all dimensions (Forward and Back, Side to Side, and Rotation).  Why do you want to do this?  By choosing exercises that move your body in all directions you will be increasing your fat loss results exponentially.

Let’s say you wanted to train your legs and butt.  A typical Leg Press machine would just have you working in the Forward and Back direction.  But what if you chose to do a Squat instead? Here’s how you could hit all directions:
  1. Basic Squat – Feet shoulder width apart and sit back as if you were going to sit on a bench and then use your legs and butt to come back up to a standing position.  (Forward and Back)
  2. Side Squat – Perform the same squatting movement but now step out to the side, alternating left and right, with each squat. (Side to Side)
  3. Sumo Walk Squat – Go down into a squat position and walk forward and back like a sumo wrestler would. (Rotation)
As you can see, this will take A LOT more muscles than just a plain old leg press and give you much, much better results.

The Truth about CORN

There’s nothing like a good piece of corn on the cob at your summer barbeque or your buttered popcorn to go along with your favorite movie, right? Or wrong?
This question seems to be coming up more and more often…
Isabel, are corn and foods made from corn allowable on The DSP?
Well, the answer is yes, BUT there are a few details you need to know first (you didn’t think I was just going to leave it at that, did you?)
It’s been approximated that about 60% of the corn, now in the U.S., is genetically modified (although, I do think this number is higher now). The practice of genetically modifying corn began in an attempt to make corn crops resistant to certain pesticides. This helps the farmer because they are then able to grow a larger crop because it is easier to fight off pests (they can spray the crops with pesticides and get rid of insects without damaging their crop).
Sweet corn has also been genetically modified (now called Bt-corn) so that it produces a poison which kills harmful insects. This means the farmer no longer needs to fight insects with insecticides.
Now although some of these may sound like a good thing (especially if you’re a farmer!), we need to consider how GMO foods respond in our bodies and what kind of long term effects they can have on our health.
Well, because the introduction of GMO foods is still relatively new, we’re in a way being used as “guinea pigs” in a massive experiment (Yikes!). In April 2007, Arpad Pusztai, from the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, UK, announced that experiments had shown intestinal changes in rats caused by eating genetically engineered potatoes (and I don’t know about you, but I’m not happy about anybody trying to mess with my intestines).
This actually doesn’t surprise me. It’s amazing to me how many more people now complain of things like irritable bowel syndrome and other nagging digestive problems. I’m not saying that eating GMO foods is the only cause for these conditions but I’m sure it’s a significant contributor (along with processed foods, but that’s a story for a different day).
Ok, so what if you’re able to get non-GMO corn? (Which it is difficult to know which brands and items are GMO and which are not) where does corn fit into your DSP meal plan?
First, your body reads corn as a grain, NOT a vegetable so if you are to include it into your meals, this will be the grain (carbohydrate) for your meal. So having corn and brown rice would be having 2 grains in one meal. This is not necessarily off limits and not “bad” in any way, just consider if you are someone who is sensitive to grains, you will lose weight faster by greatly reducing the number of grains you eat each day. You may want to take 2 – 3 weeks and follow the “no grain” meal plans in the Diet Solution manual and see if that helps break through any weight loss plateaus and/or helps your digestion.
What about microwave popcorn?
Well even the organic varieties contain preservatives (of course to keep them in the bag) and have been shown to contain the same chemical coating in the bag that is used on non-stick cookware (double YIKES!). I would stay away from this stuff.
How about air popped popcorn?
This is your best bet and can definitely be used as an occasional snack. But notice I said “occasional”. Remember most people lose weight faster by decreasing (not necessarily eliminating) many grains. Snacking on popcorn every day could and most likely will, impede your weight loss efforts.
I hope this information helps you to make a more informed decision at your next barbeque and at your next movie night. Remember, corn is not off limits by any means, just remember you’re looking for the non-GMO varieties and including it as a grain and not a vegetable into your meal plans.

The Diet Solution

The Best Diet Plan is NO Diet at all!

As a nutritionist, the most common question I get daily is “What is the Best Diet to follow?”  My answer is always the same and one that shocks many people.  “The best diet to follow is to follow NO diet at all.”  How could any nutritionist wanting to promote health tell you not to follow a diet?”
Easy.  I’m here to tell you that diets do not work.  They are one of the most common reasons people have such a hard time losing weight.  People are making the mistake of following a diet instead of following a delicious way of eating that will satisfy their hunger, their taste buds and help them reach and maintain an optimum weight and optimum health.
With all of the junk food, false advertising, and false information out in the world today, how is this even possible?  A delicious way of eating healthy that will help me lose weight at the same time?
Yes, this is possible for you once you are armed with the correct information.
The best diet is going to be one that you can stick to (for more than just a week), one that includes delicious food and one you are happy with, not to mention one that you can maintain for a lifetime.

2.  Do not go cold turkey.
Rome wasn’t built in a day right?  You do not have to change every single one of your habits overnight.  Establishing one healthy eating habit each week or eliminate one “not so good” food every week.  This will prove to be life changing in just 1-2 months.  Not to mention it will eliminate any stress or anxiety you may have over changing all of your habits overnight.  Start with the easiest one for you.  How about drinking water?  Can you replace your sugar drinks with water and just do that for one week?  How about just cutting down on a few sodas and replacing them with water?  One small step each week will make your transition simple and easy.
3.  Do not go hungry.
Another very common mistake I see is people starving themselves in an effort to lose weight quickly.  The truth is you do not need to feel hunger in order to effectively lose weight.  Actually, the contrary is true.  You must give your body enough nourishment (good nourishment, that is) in order to see weight loss results.  Make sure to feed your body consistently throughout the day.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all important but so are snacks in between.  Munching on things like raw nuts, fresh fruits and healthy trail mixes can really keep you from experiencing any hunger throughout the day and help control any cravings that may come up.
